Sag is a specification problem
When a foam mattress develops a dip where someone sleeps, the usual reaction is that it was a bad mattress. More precisely, it was the wrong mattress for the way it was used — and that was decided when it was specified.
Almost all early sagging comes from a handful of predictable causes. Knowing them is the best protection, whether you are buying one mattress or a thousand.
A core too soft for the load
The core carries the body. If it is too soft for the weight it supports night after night, the foam cells under the heaviest part of the body — usually the hips — are compressed further than they can fully recover from. Over months, that becomes a permanent impression.
A mattress can feel lovely in the showroom and still be under-specified for its use. Softness is felt in seconds; support is tested over years. This is especially true in institutional settings, where the same mattress supports many different weights of person.
No proper base layer
A well-built foam mattress has a firm base beneath its comfort layers, often rebonded foam. The base stops the mattress bottoming out under concentrated load and gives the softer layers something to work against.
Leave it out — or use too thin a base to cut cost — and the whole mattress flexes into the frame. The softer layers then do a job they were never designed for and wear out early. Missing or thin bases are one of the most common reasons low-priced mattresses fail.
Foam that was not properly cured
Freshly poured foam keeps curing for hours after it leaves the foaming line. Foam that is cut and built into mattresses before it has stabilised can change over the following weeks, and its structure may not perform as it should.
A buyer cannot see this, which is why it matters who made the foam. A supplier rushing cure to meet a delivery date is saving time you pay for later. We explain the cure in more detail in how polyurethane foam is made.
Edges and borders
Many people sit on the edge of the bed every day. Without edge support and a well-made border, the perimeter softens and rolls, and the usable width of the mattress shrinks.
A reinforced, properly closed border — tape-edged rather than loosely finished — helps the mattress hold its shape. It is a detail that looks like decoration and behaves like structure.
Use it was not built for
Some sagging is simply a mismatch between mattress and use. A domestic mattress used in a hostel, a mattress never rotated on a single-person bed, or a mattress on a frame with poor or broken slats will all fail earlier than they should.
Slats deserve a special mention. A mattress placed on widely spaced or sagging slats will sag with them, and it will look like the mattress's fault.
What to specify instead
- A core firm enough for the heaviest regular use, not the showroom feel
- A proper base layer, usually rebonded foam, of adequate thickness
- Foam from a manufacturer that cures before cutting
- A reinforced, tape-edged border
- A mattress built for the setting — domestic, hotel, hostel or healthcare
- A supportive frame, and a routine of rotating the mattress
