Manufacturer, converter or trader?
The first thing to establish is what the business actually does, because three very different kinds of company all describe themselves as foam suppliers.
A manufacturer pours foam: it runs a foaming line and controls the chemistry. A converter buys foam blocks from a manufacturer and cuts, laminates or assembles them. A trader buys finished foam or mattresses and sells them on.
All three can be good partners. But they control very different amounts of what you receive. A converter or trader cannot guarantee next year's foam will match this year's, because someone else makes it. If consistency between orders matters to you, that difference is the whole question.
Directory listings are not a reliable guide — businesses are often listed under the wrong category. Ask directly: do you pour the foam yourselves?
Ask to see the plant
For any substantial or long-term order, visit. A foam plant is not something that can be faked for a morning. You will see whether there is a foaming line, whether cured blocks are handled carefully, whether the cutting hall is organised, and what happens to the offcuts.
Look at housekeeping in particular. Foam dust and loose trim near freshly cured blocks is both a quality signal and a fire risk, and a plant that manages it well usually manages everything else well too.
A supplier who is reluctant to let a serious buyer visit is telling you something.
Samples, and then samples of the order
Every serious supplier will send samples before you commit. That is the easy part. The more revealing step is checking your first delivery against the sample you approved.
Keep the approved sample. When the order arrives, compare the two — feel, weight for the same size, dimensions, finish. A good supplier expects this. The gap, if there is one, tells you more than any brochure.
Paperwork that should exist
A legitimate manufacturer in India will have, and should readily share, the basics:
- GST registration, with a GSTIN you can verify on the government portal
- Company or firm registration details
- Proper tax invoices for every delivery
- Test reports for any specific claim — a fire standard, for example — naming the standard
Treat claims without paperwork as marketing. "Premium", "high density" and "certified" mean nothing until they name something checkable.
Consistency is what you are really buying
Price is easy to compare and consistency is hard, which is why buyers so often choose on price and regret it. A cheaper supplier whose foam varies from delivery to delivery costs more in rejected stock, customer complaints and your own staff's time than the saving was worth.
Ask how the supplier controls consistency. How is incoming raw material checked? What is checked before goods are packed? How do they handle a delivery that does not match the approved sample? Specific, practical answers are a good sign. Vague reassurance is not.
Red flags
- Unwilling to say whether they manufacture or trade
- No plant visit for a serious buyer
- Samples that are noticeably better than the delivery
- Claims — "FR", "certified", "orthopaedic" — with no named standard or report
- No written specification on a repeat order
- A price well below every other quote, with no explanation

How do I know if a foam supplier is a real manufacturer?
Ask whether they pour the foam themselves, and visit the plant. A foaming line and a cutting hall are hard to misrepresent in person.
