A sofa is not one cushion
The seat carries concentrated load, repeatedly, in the same place. The back carries almost no load but needs to feel supportive. The arms are touched constantly and barely compressed at all.
Specifying one foam for all three is the commonest mistake in furniture manufacturing. It produces either a sofa with a rock-hard back or, far more often, a sofa whose seat has collapsed while the back is still perfect.
What the seat actually needs
Seats want resilience - the ability to recover shape after load, thousands of times. That is what high-resilience (HR) foam exists for. It is not simply firmer foam; it has a different cell structure that returns energy rather than absorbing it.
Under the resilient layer, a firmer base gives the cushion structure and stops it bottoming out on the frame. In contract and office seating, where the same seat is used by many people all day, this two-layer approach is standard rather than a luxury.
Domestic versus contract is a real distinction
A domestic sofa is used by the same few people for a few hours a day. A contract seat - a hotel lobby, a waiting room, an office - is used by dozens of different weights of person continuously.
Contract seating therefore wants a firmer, more resilient build than the same shape would need at home, and it will feel slightly hard when new. That is correct. A contract seat specified to feel perfect on day one will feel wrong by month six.
Feel is not the same as firmness
Two foams can measure the same firmness and feel completely different, because how a foam behaves under increasing load - whether it firms up progressively or gives way suddenly - is a separate property from how it responds to first touch.
This is why sending a sample of a foam you already like is worth more than any description. A manufacturer can assess a physical sample and match it. Nobody can reliably match "medium-firm but not too bouncy".
What to tell your foam supplier
Tell them the piece, the part, the use and the sizes: "three-seater sofa, seat cushions, domestic, cut to this drawing" is a complete brief. Add whether the cushion is fibre-wrapped, since that changes how the foam should be specified underneath.
And say whether the piece is going into contract use. It changes the answer, and a supplier who does not ask is not paying attention.
